Fragrance notes are the different scent layers that make up a perfume. They are categorized into three levels: top notes, middle notes, and base notes. The top notes are the initial, light scents you smell right after spraying. Middle notes, also known as heart notes, emerge as the top notes fade, forming the main character of the fragrance. Base notes are the rich, deep scents that provide the fragrance’s foundation and longevity, lingering for hours.
To extend the life of your fragrance, apply it to moisturized skin. Fragrance clings better to hydrated skin than to dry skin. Also, focus on applying it to your pulse points, such as your wrists, neck, and behind your ears. The warmth of these areas helps to diffuse the scent throughout the day. You can also layer scents by using a matching body lotion or shower gel from the same fragrance line.
Choosing a perfume is a personal journey. Start by identifying the scent families you are drawn to (e.g., floral, woody, fresh, or oriental). Consider the occasion and your mood. A light, fresh scent might be perfect for daily wear, while a rich, oriental one is great for evenings. Always test the perfume on your skin and allow it to develop for at least 30 minutes to an hour to experience all the notes.
The main difference is the concentration of fragrance oils. Eau de Parfum (EDP) has a higher concentration (15-20%) and generally lasts longer than Eau de Toilette (EDT), which has a lower concentration (5-15%). EDP is a great choice for long-lasting, noticeable fragrance, while EDT is often lighter and more suitable for daily wear.
Perfume should be stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes. A bathroom cabinet is not an ideal place due to humidity. Keeping your perfume in its original box can also help protect it from light. When stored correctly, a perfume can last for several years without its scent profile changing.
Your individual body chemistry, including your skin’s pH, diet, and hormones, can affect how a fragrance smells on you. The oils in the perfume interact with your unique chemistry, creating a scent that is entirely your own. This is why testing a fragrance on your skin is the most crucial step before making a purchase.
